About Jervis bay Tallow
Tallow is a traditional skincare ingredient that has been used for generations to soften and protect the skin.
Its fatty acid profile is similar to human sebum, allowing it to absorb easily and support the skin barrier rather than sitting on top. Our formulations retain naturally occurring vitamins A, D, K and E, without synthetic stabilisers or fragrance.
We’re drawn to it for its simplicity, its compatibility with the skin, and the way it feels when used thoughtfully...without unnecessary additives or complexity.
Our approach is minimal by design: fewer ingredients, chosen carefully, and made with care.
Made with care. Nothing more.
How we render our Tallow
We render all of our tallow in‑house, in small batches, using a controlled process designed to be slow, careful, and consistent.
Rather than relying on shortcuts or outsourcing, we take responsibility for each stage, from raw fat to finished base, so we can control how it looks, feels, and smells.
Our rendering process happens in three stages:
Wet rendering: We begin with a gentle wet rendering process, using water and salt to slowly draw out impurities while keeping temperatures low and controlled.
Filtration: The rendered tallow is then carefully filtered to remove remaining solids, helping achieve clarity and a neutral scent.
Dry rendering: Finally, the tallow is gently dried to remove residual moisture. This step helps create a stable base that performs consistently across batches.
Infusion: For some products, we then infuse the finished tallow with carefully selected essential oils or organic herbs and spices. These infusions are subtle and restrained, intended to add a gentle scent or character.
Stability and water-activity testing: Each batch is assessed for water activity (aw) as part of our stability checks. Lower water activity supports long‑term stability and consistency. Our finished tallow bases consistently test below 0.7 aw, well below commonly referenced thresholds associated with instability in fat‑based products. This allows us to keep formulations simple and rely on careful rendering, clean handling, and controlled conditions, rather than adding unnecessary preservatives or emulsifiers.
We don’t rush this process, and we don’t add anything unnecessary.
Once complete, the tallow is bottled in dark amber glass to protect it from light and maintain its quality over time.

Tallow science (FAQ)
Tallow is a traditional skincare ingredient made up of fats that are naturally compatible with the skin. When used thoughtfully, it can help soften dry‑feeling skin and support everyday moisture without feeling heavy
Why Tallow for Skin?
Is Tallow suitable for my face?
Many people use tallow‑based products on the face and find them comfortable when used sparingly. Because tallow is rich and concentrated, we recommend starting with a very small amount and observing how your skin responds. Skin is individual, and what works well for one person may not suit another.
No. Our tallow is carefully rendered (at least 3 times) and purified to remove impurities and moisture. The result is a neutral‑scent base that doesn’t carry a “beefy” or “meaty” smell.
Does it smell meaty?
Tallow behaves differently to water‑based or petroleum products. It may take a little longer to settle, but most people find it softens into the skin rather than sitting on the surface when used sparingly.
Is it greasy?
People with dry or tight‑feeling skin
Those who prefer simple, minimalist formulations
Anyone looking to reduce unnecessary steps or ingredients in their routine
Who is Tallow for?
Deer tallow comes from animals with naturally varied diets and environments, which can result in subtle differences in texture and feel. It isn’t better or worse, just different, and naturally more variable from batch to batch.
How is Deer Tallow different to Beef?
Sustainability and local sourcing
Our skincare is crafted from existing agricultural and wildlife management systems. Nothing is farmed or culled for skincare alone

About Us
Born from the Bush and the Bay
We’re Sarah and Josh.
We live on the South Coast of New South Wales, spending our time freediving the reefs of Jervis Bay, kayaking Kangaroo Valley, and walking the coastal tracks nearby.
Living this close to the elements shaped how we think about skincare...what we use, how it feels, and what actually earns a place in a daily routine.
Jervis Bay Tallow began as a personal project and grew into a commitment to local, circular sourcing. By working with NSW suppliers and carefully managed deer culls, we turn traditional fats into small‑batch skincare, made with intention.
We don’t believe in filler ingredients or trend‑driven formulations.
We believe in making fewer products, and making them properly.
