Tallow science (FAQ)
Tallow contains a balance of saturated and monounsaturated fats similar to those found naturally in the skin barrier. This similarity helps reduce surface residue and supports long‑lasting hydration without occlusion.
Why Tallow for Skin?
How is Deer Tallow different to Beef?
Wild deer forage across diverse native vegetation, resulting in a denser fat structure. Deer tallow is naturally firmer than beef tallow, making it popular among customers seeking a more protective, barrier‑focused balm.
No. Our tallow undergoes a multi‑stage purification process designed to remove impurities and moisture while preserving fat structure. The result is a neutral‑scent base that carries botanicals cleanly, with no residual “beefy” or "meaty" smell.
Does it smell meaty?
Tallow absorbs differently than petroleum‑based products. Because its structure is closer to natural skin oils, most users report it softens into the skin rather than sitting on the surface. It does take a little while to sink in vs water based moisturisers...but that's because it is actually sinking in and moisturising.
Is it greasy?
People with dry or dehydrated skin.
People with sensitive skin.
Those seeking truly natural, minimalist skincare.
The chemically-conscious.

About Us
Born from the Bush and the Bay
We’re Sarah and Josh.
We spend our time freediving the reefs of Jervis Bay, Kayaking in Kangaroo Valley and hiking the South Coast tracks. Living this close to the elements taught us quickly: most skincare doesn’t hold up to salt, wind, sun, and sweat...without relying on synthetic fixes.
Jervis Bay Tallow began as a personal solution, then grew into a commitment to local circular sourcing. By working with NSW suppliers and deer culls, we turn nutrient‑dense fats into small‑batch skincare that respects both skin and land.
We don’t believe in filler ingredients or trend‑driven formulations.
We believe in making fewer products and making them properly.
